Medicinal Cannabis Matters | Friday roundup 31st January 2025.

Medicinal Cannabis Matters – Our weekly round-up of what has been happening in the world of medicinal cannabis this week.
This week, we explore the potential of cannabinoids in managing opioid-related pain, dive into Saff Khalique’s personal journey with medicinal cannabis, and highlight the upcoming Medicann 5K—plus how you can contribute to the cause.
Cannabinoids may be more effective than opioids for pain, Yale University finds.
Scientists from Yale University have published a study that demonstrates how non-psychoactive parts of the cannabis plant can suppress a part of the brain that plays a significant role in pain. The study showed that the cannabinoids interacted with a protein called Nav.1.8 found in sensory neurons within the spine. Nav.1.8 can make people feel pain by enabling the repetitive firing of the sensory neurons, which transmit pain signals to the brain.
Saff Khalique talks about her journey with medicinal cannabis.
Saff Khalique was battling with her endometriosis and uses her treatments to manage the debilitating pain she experiences, and the anxiety around her medical appointments. Saff found herself relying on opioid medicine, but her medicinal cannabis treatment has meant she no longer needs it.
