Medicinal Cannabis Matters | Friday roundup 11th July 2025
Welcome to this week’s edition of Medicinal Cannabis Matters by Medicann. Your new trusted Friday round-up focuses on the latest developments in medicinal cannabis research, patient care, and clinical insights. This edition highlights two major topics: a remarkable report on seizure freedom using medical cannabis oil in drug-resistant epilepsy, and a comprehensive review of medical cannabis for managing chronic pain

Medical Cannabis Oil Offers Seizure Freedom for Drug‑Resistant Epilepsy
A UK case series involving 19 adults and children with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) treated with medicinal cannabis oil containing both CBD and THC found that all participants achieved at least three months of seizure freedom, with some remaining seizure-free for over a year.
The report builds on emerging preclinical evidence suggesting that THC, when used in low and carefully controlled doses, may enhance anti-seizure effects when combined with CBD.

Why this matters:
For individuals living with DRE, achieving seizure freedom can be life-changing — improving not just neurological outcomes but also overall quality of life, independence, and mental wellbeing. This case series adds to the growing clinical rationale for carefully balanced cannabinoid therapy where standard medications have failed.
At Medicann, we’ve seen this impact first-hand. Our patient Shaun is a powerful example of how lives can be transformed through personalised medicinal cannabis care. If you haven’t yet read Shaun’s story, you can do so here.
Medical Cannabis and chronic pain – a closer look
Medicinal cannabis contains natural compounds that are increasingly being used to help manage different types of pain. Two of the most well-known compounds, THC and CBD, can work together to support the body’s natural pain regulation systems.
The most consistent benefits have been seen in people living with nerve-related (neuropathic) pain, where many report meaningful relief — especially when other treatments haven’t worked. The way cannabis works in the body means results can vary depending on the type of pain and how the treatment is tailored.
One well-known product, Sativex, has been used successfully for pain linked to nerve damage and cancer. And in a recent Finnish study, patients with chronic back pain experienced better relief using a cannabis-based treatment than those using a traditional prescription painkiller.
Encouragingly, cannabis medicines may also help people reduce their reliance on stronger, more addictive medications — like opioids — offering a safer, more manageable long-term approach to pain.

Medicinal cannabis isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, but for many people living with long-term pain, it can be life-changing. In a private clinical setting, where treatments can be carefully tailored and closely supported, many patients find lasting relief that improves their quality of life.
To summarise
- Medical cannabis oil containing both CBD and THC is showing powerful potential in cases of drug-resistant epilepsy, including reports of sustained seizure freedom.
- For chronic pain, cannabis-based medicines continue to prove beneficial, especially in neuropathic conditions or when aiming to reduce reliance on stronger medications.
