200 Fundraisers, Giant Breasts and Cannabis Leaves: The Medicann 5k Your Way Raises over £7,000 for ABC Jersey.

For the third consecutive year, Medicann brought the local community together in Jersey to mark World Cancer Day, with this year’s event raising over an impressive £7,000 for local cancer charity ABC Jersey.

200 fundraisers took part in the Medicann 5k, Your Way, with patients, friends and families, regardless of ability or age, running, walking and cycling in support of one another and to raise awareness for World Cancer Day.

Participants showed their support, with some wearing giant inflatable breasts and cannabis leaf costumes - bringing energy, humour and visibility to the event while highlighting important health messages.

World Cancer Day takes place on Wednesday 4 February, and as part of Medicann’s ongoing community event programme and part of the only event of its kind on the Island, the Medicann 5k, Your Way continued to support improvements to services for breast cancer patients in Jersey.

Sarah Burns, Ambassador of ABC Jersey, commented ahead of the event:

“We are incredibly grateful to Medicann and everyone taking part in this year’s Medicann 5k, Your Way. The continued support year on year means so much to ABC Jersey, and the funds raised will make a real difference for people affected by breast cancer in the Island. Events like this not only raise vital funds, but also help bring the community together to raise awareness and show support for those who need it most.”

Medicann prescribes medicinal cannabis for a wide range of qualifying conditions, and Gary Whipp, CEO of Medicann, said:

“Events like the Medicann 5k, Your Way, are so important for Islanders to come together as a community, supporting each other and raising awareness for causes like World Cancer Day. They are also a key part of our wider commitment to educating the public about the benefits of medicinal cannabis, which can be prescribed for over 50 qualifying conditions. By running, walking or cycling in these events, we help reduce stigma around medical cannabis while reminding people that treatment should always be overseen by a qualified clinician. These events give patients, families and the wider community an opportunity to learn, share experiences, and understand the vital role clinical guidance plays in each patient’s journey.”

The event was originally created by Gary Whipp in 2024, and reflecting on its growth over the past three years, he added:

“It’s been incredible to see how this event has grown year on year. We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone come together once again in support of World Cancer Day in 2027"

Gary Bellot, Chair of ABC Jersey commended the event “The sun shone and it was a wonderful day enjoyed by all, bringing people together for a shared and meaningful cause. Events like this help to open conversations about breast cancer, encourage early detection, and remind people of the importance of regular screening and self-checks. (TLC) By increasing awareness, we can help reduce stigma, provide reassurance, and ensure more people feel informed, supported, and empowered to seek help when needed”.
