The Lieutenant Governor Visits Medicann Clinics to Learn How Medical Cannabis Is Supporting islanders’ health and wellbeing.

Douglas, Isle of Man - the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, His Excellency Sir John Lorimer, and his wife, Lady Lorimer, visited Medicann’s Medicinal Cannabis Clinic at 1 Strand Street, Douglas, to learn more about how medical cannabis is helping Islanders manage their health conditions.

During the visit, Sir John met with clinicians and staff to understand how regulated medical cannabis is being prescribed safely and responsibly to patients across the Island. The visit highlighted the growing role that cannabis medicines are playing in improving quality of life for people living with chronic and complex conditions since the law on the Island changed after the initial medicinal cannabis pilot in 2023.

Medicann’s flagship clinic in the Isle of Man is the only clinic on the Island with local doctors. It operates alongside 420 PHARMA, the Isle of Man’s only pharmacy that was created with the sole purpose of dispensing medicinal cannabis and that is all that they do, ensuring staff are focused on this medication and the patient’s needs. This is the only fully integrated model where consultation, prescribing, dispensing, and patient support is all under one roof.

Since opening in 2025, the clinic has supported a growing number of patients to better manage their health through personalised treatment plans using unlicensed cannabis-based medication.

Speaking following the visit, Gary Whipp, CEO of Medicann, said: “We were honoured to welcome His Excellency to our Isle of Man clinic.

This visit reflects the importance of open dialogue and education around prescribed medical cannabis. Since opening our flagship clinic in 2025, we have seen first-hand how regulated access to cannabis-based medicines can make a meaningful difference to patients living with chronic pain, neurological conditions, and many other health challenges. Our focus has always been on safe, clinician-led care, supported by education and ongoing patient support.”

Medicann first opened in Jersey in 2019, followed by its clinic in Guernsey in 2021. In 2025, Medicann started prescribing patients in the Isle of Man in 2025 after a pilot scheme by the Government welcomed new laws on the Island for specialist doctors to prescribe CBPMs.

Sir John Lorimer, said on the visit: “I have often been asked about a range of subjects including medicinal cannabis, and the visit has helped me to better understand the nuances of medicinal cannabis prescribing and Medicann's role in it by hearing directly from Medicann's local clinicians and prescribing team.”

In addition to clinical care, Medicann has hosted a series of educational events aimed at increasing public understanding of medical cannabis. These events focus on safe access, appropriate prescribing, and empowering patients with accurate information on how prescribed medical cannabis may support their health when conventional treatments have not been effective.

The clinic continues to work closely with healthcare professionals, regulators, and the wider community to ensure that medical cannabis on the Isle of Man is delivered to the highest clinical standards, supporting Islanders to manage their health with confidence and care.
