Medicinal Cannabis Matters: Friday Roundup - 31 July 2026
Welcome to this week’s roundup, where we explore promising early-stage cancer research, the potential role of medicinal cannabis in addressing women's health inequalities and new findings investigating the relationship between cannabis use and brain health.

Early Cancer Research Shows Promising Laboratory Results
A new study, reported by Business of Cannabis, has found that a naturally occurring cannabis flavonoid significantly reduced the growth of cancer cells in laboratory testing.
The research focused on a flavonoid called cannflavin A, a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant that is distinct from cannabinoids such as THC and CBD. Researchers found that cannflavin A inhibited the growth of certain cancer cells by up to 99% in laboratory conditions.
While these findings are encouraging, it's important to remember that the research was carried out in a laboratory using cancer cells and does not demonstrate that medicinal cannabis can treat or cure cancer in people. However, studies like this are valuable because they help scientists identify compounds that could one day contribute to the development of new medicines.
Could Medicinal Cannabis Help Bridge the Women's Health Gap?
A new article from Leafie explores how medicinal cannabis could play a greater role in addressing the long-standing inequalities that exist in women's healthcare.
Women are disproportionately affected by a number of chronic conditions, including endometriosis, fibromyalgia, migraine and menopause-related symptoms. Many also experience delays in diagnosis or find that existing treatment options do not fully manage their symptoms.
The article discusses how growing evidence suggests medicinal cannabis may offer symptom relief for some patients living with these conditions, particularly in areas such as chronic pain, sleep disturbances and anxiety. While more research focusing specifically on women's health is still needed, increasing attention is being given to how medicinal cannabis could help address unmet clinical needs.
New Study Explores Cannabis Use and Brain Health
New research highlighted by the International Cannabis Business Conference (ICBC) has explored the relationship between cannabis use and brain volume.
The study found that cannabis use was positively associated with the volume of certain regions of the brain, with researchers observing larger regional brain volumes in some participants compared with non-users. The findings add to ongoing scientific discussion about how cannabis may interact with the brain, although they do not establish that cannabis use directly causes these differences.
Researchers emphasise that further investigation is needed to better understand the significance of these findings, including whether factors such as dosage, frequency of use and the type of cannabis products used may influence outcomes.
While many of these studies remain at an early stage, each one adds to the growing evidence base surrounding medicinal cannabis and helps guide future clinical research.
If you're considering whether medicinal cannabis may be suitable for your condition, you can check your eligibility online in just two minutes. It's free to complete and could be the first step towards speaking with one of our specialist prescribing doctors.
