Travelling abroad with medical cannabis: what you need to know

A holiday or work trip abroad shouldn't mean putting your treatment on hold. But if you take medical cannabis, travelling can bring up questions that don't come up with other medicines - is it legal where you're going, can you take it through airport security, and what paperwork do you actually need?

Can you take medical cannabis abroad?

The starting point is simple, even if the details are not - your UK prescription is only recognised in the UK. Once you cross a border, the laws of the country you are entering apply, not UK law. Some countries have their own medical cannabis programmes and clear routes for visiting patients. Others do not recognise foreign prescriptions at all, and a handful treat any cannabis, regardless of purpose, as a serious criminal offence.

This means that having a valid, legal prescription at home does not guarantee you can travel with your medication. Before booking anything, it is essential to check the specific rules of every country you will visit or pass through, including any layovers, since transit countries apply their own laws too.

Which countries allow medical cannabis?

At the time of writing, a number of European countries, including Germany, Italy, Portugal and France, have some form of medical cannabis framework in place. However, having a domestic programme does not automatically mean visiting patients can bring their own medication in freely. Can you bring medical cannabis on a plane?

Under the right circumstances, yes. Never transfer it into another container.

It's also worth thinking ahead about whether you'll need to take a dose during the flight itself, not just on arrival. Vaping obviously isn't an option in the air, so if your usual method of taking your medication relies on this, you'll need a plan for the journey itself.

Does travel insurance cover medical cannabis?

Standard travel insurance policies do not always cover treatment involving cannabis-based medicines, and some may exclude cover if you are travelling to a country where your medication is not legally recognised. It is worth speaking to your insurer directly, explaining your prescription, and getting confirmation in writing of what is and is not covered, including emergency medical care and any legal assistance, before you travel.
